A type of fundamental drilling tool used in drilling engineering is the DTH Hammer. The pneumatic hammer and pneumatic down-the-hole hammer are other names for the same tool. The energy of compressed air is employed to provide continuous impact to the bottom of the load power tool when it is powered by a compressed air medium. Compressed air can also be used as a pore-cleansing agent. High-pressure and low-pressure, valveless, and valved DTH Hammers are available. Typically, the drill is rotated at a low speed without coring while the DTH Hammers are directly coupled with the cemented carbide drill bit to impact the gravel in a strontium-moving manner.

Fast action, strong impact, minimal gas use, and long life are all advantages of the down-the-hole hammer. In geotechnical engineering, it is frequently employed to break through a variety of medium- and high-hard, resistant rocks with poor drillability. With a particular structural drill bit and the ability to drill through soft soil, it is appropriate for drilling through the gravel and hard rocks. Although ROP is typically substantially higher than hydraulic percussion drills, a larger air compressor is needed.
